ESPARTO--the population center of the Capay Valley region...

116 years ago--1890  (Quoted in The Daily Democrat, May 22, 2006)

..."the reporter...visited Esparto recently...evident prosperity and growth...putting down water pipes on the various streets.

The mammoth store of Levy & Schwab was a surprise.  They carry an immense stock; the main building is of two stories, and is more than filled with dry goods, clothing, boots and shoes, carpets, furniture, carriages, harness, etc.  Mr. Edgar, the postmaster, has his store about ready for business.  Mr. Houx, the druggist, was moving in his stock...Mr. Tompkins, of the lumber yard, looked busy, and all others seemed prospering.  After a splendid supper at the Barnes...returned to Woodland."

Esparto was established in 1888.  Originally named "Esperanza" by the Capay Valley Land Company, this railroad town's name was changed in 1890 to Esparto after the strong native Esparto Grass.
